Round 1 – Open Women’s v Forestville Ferrets – Lost 38-0

Our first Opens Women’s tackle side!! Well where do we start? These girls have been working hard on building a team for the 2019 season, with many girls trying their first game of tackle rugby league in the Summer 9s competition put on by NSWRL. We have had a shaky start and some setbacks with a season ending injury to Mia at training, very few turning up to training, and others pulling out with other commitments leaving us with 13 to take the field for the first game.

So – our first game is against the Forestville Ferrets at Ferretsville Oval in Forestville, and we have had seriously one training run where 13 turned up. Let me say how proud of all these girls I am for turning up and playing their hearts out, knowing they were up against a very experienced side.

The whistle blows and off we go! The girls were hitting each other with some big shots and it was clear our girls were ready to have a go. We lost Tiarna early in the game with a suspected dislocated knee (wishing Tiarna a speedy recovery), so we were down to 12. Luckily the Ferrets were kind enough to give us two of their players for the remainder of the game to get us through. We showed incredible courage throughout the game, coming very close to scoring a few times only to be denied by the Ferrets solid defence. The Ferrets had several ex-Jillaroo players and players from the North Sydney Bears, so their line speed, notable experience and speed getting up to play the ball seen us caught out allowing them to score some good tries.

On the back of showing such resilience and determination, we have been lucky to recruit several players wanting to join our team and come out of retirement. Their experience will be greatly appreciated.

Despite playing in a very physical game and being very sore, we had a great training run with 15 this Monday, which is very encouraging for our season. Another 3 are expected to join the team this Thursday.

A big thankyou to Georgia who volunteered to take these girls on for the last couple of months due to us not being able to find a coach and has done an awesome job under challenging circumstances. Thank you to Matt Stubbs for filling in as Trainer this week and with a bit of luck we might see Matt help a bit more.

This week, we have our first home game up against the Newtown Jets Girls. We hope to see a massive crowd to show support for our girls who will play at 12pm before the 2nd Grade.

Keep up the great work girls and with some more players and training we will improve from here. H
